3 Things to Know About Replacing Your Car's Headlights

Headlights are essential for safely driving at night, but many people don't think about their car's headlights until they become dim or one or both burn out. Knowing when to replace your car's headlights can ensure that you will always have the visibility needed to drive after dark. Continue reading to learn more about replacing your headlights:

Know When to Replace Your Headlights

While the bulbs used in headlights generally last for a long time, they will eventually burn out and need to be replaced. One of the most common signs of headlights that are near the end of their lifespan is a noticeable dimming or fading when the lights are on. If you notice that one headlight has burned out, it is in your best interest to change both headlights at the same time, since the other one is not likely to last long after the first one burns out.

Types of Headlights

There are several different types of headlights available. Some of the most common types of headlights are:

Halogen: Halogen headlights are very common and are typically the type of headlight installed in cars when they are manufactured. They can last for hundreds of hours and are typically quite affordable.

LED: LED headlights are known for being very bright and lasting a long time. They also require less power from the car to operate. However, they can be considerably more expensive than halogen headlights.

HID: HID headlights create an incredibly bright light and last the longest out of all of the types of headlights. In most cases, HID headlights can operate for thousands of hours before burning out. They also have a low operating temperature and require very little power to operate.

Choosing the Right Headlights

If you have noticed that your headlights are dimming and need to be changed, consult your car's owners manual for information. The owners manual will list the types and sizes of headlights that are compatible with your vehicle. After determining the type and size, consider the brightness, whiteness of the light provided, and the price that you can afford to pay for new headlights.

New headlights can be purchased at an automotive lighting retailer, an auto parts store, or online. In the event that you're unsure about which type or brand of headlights to purchase, consider making your purchase in person. When you visit an automotive lighting company or an auto parts store, an associate can assist you with your selection.
